September 9, 2013 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

MAMSA Presents; HISTORY 101

September 7 – 14, 2013

A week-long celebration of the history of the United States and Mount Airy, Maryland, incorporated 1894

Monday, Sept. 9 - 7 PM Pine Grove Chapel

Susan Rosenvold is our guest; she will discuss General JEB Stuart’s ride into Maryland, through Mount Airy and Carroll County on his way to the Battle of Gettysburg. General Stuart was one of the most colorful military leaders made famous by the Civil War. Attendees will learn about Stuart, the controversy surrounding his march and some things Stuart did not expect that played a significant role in American Civil War History.

(Ms. Rosenvold formerly operated the Pry House Field Hospital Museum at Antietam National Battlefield, and is presently the project manager for an upcoming museum “Clara Barton’s Missing Soldiers Office”. She works with the National Museum of Civil War Medicine in Frederick, Maryland)

Pine Grove Chapel was constructed in 1846 as a Presbyterian Church, but was used during the Civil War as housing for Union soldiers brought in to guard the vital local railroad lines running between Baltimore and Frederick, supplying Union troops. The building, located at 806 South Main Street, is now a museum. It has been renovated, and is opened for special occasions.
