Water Billing Update

Posted on by maweierbach

Some concerns have been expressed regarding the recent quarterly water billing.

The following information may be helpful as we had several events occur all at the same time.

1. Last quarter we estimated water usage due to a meter reading equipment malfunction. If we under estimated last quarter some saw an increase usage amount with this bill as we balanced out and put your meters back on track. Meaning, if you combine the two quarters everyone was charged for exactly what they used, but this last quarter could seem higher than normal. This combined with the fact this quater is generally the highest usage quarter for most. We are taking steps to reduce future equipment failures.

2. We had a 10% rate increase this quarter, approved by Council to make the water and sewer department self supporting. We also restructured fees to assist low water users, and they may have noticed a reduction. An across the board service charge was added to compensate.

3. The Chesapeake Bay Restoration fee doubled. It went from $ 7.50 to $ 15.00. The Town does not control this fee.

* Those that were under estimated and were balanced out with this latest reading, would have had the underestimate amount only fall into the higher rate schedule. So if you were underestimated it’s possible a small portion of your water bill was charged at a higher rate. If you have concerns, please contact Marsha Zimmerman at Town Hall 301-829-1424 for assistance.

** The Town has been promoting Water Conservation through the Water Commissions post in local papers. We also have several water saving devices available at town hall free to town residents.

Warmest Regards,

Patrick Rockinberg

Mayor Town of Mount Airy

Effective with the October 2012 water/sewer bill there was a rate increase as approved with the Town Budget in May 2012. Included in the rate increase for the water and sewer, the State of Maryland also increased the Bay Restoration Fee. This fee went from $30.00 a year to $60.00 a year which increased the water bills by $7.50 a quarter.
