In support of Mt. Airy’s September 10, 2018 special Town Council election, there will be a Live Candidate Forum on Thursday, August 16, to be held at the Mt. Airy Senior Center.
The success of locally organized and coordinated Candidate Forums the past several years in advance of local Town elections prompted the decision to offer a live forum in support of the special election. Both residents and candidates have remarked that they feel the forums are a good way to get to know the candidates better and where they stand on the issues.
This particular special election is for the purpose of selecting a new Town Council member to fill the remaining term (through 2021) of Scott Strong’s seat on Council. Strong recently moved with his family to Arizona because of a job change. A total of three (3) local candidates are vying for Strong’s Council seat. They include two current Planning Commission members, Scott Sirchio and Patty Washabaugh and a recent SCHS graduate, Matt McDonough.
The forum will get underway at the Senior Center at 7:00 p.m. sharp and run for approximately 75 - 90 minutes. Similar to last year, the moderator for the forum will be an impartial, well-spoken individual who resides outside of the Town and therefore is not able to vote in local Town elections.
Mt. Airy residents who reside within the Town boundary are encouraged to take full advantage of the forum by either submitting questions in advance or attending the live event on the 16th. Questions can either be emailed (limit of one question per resident) between now and the forum to event coordinator, firstname.lastname@example.org, or written out and turned in at the live event.
And as with previous Mt. Airy forums, the event will be covered by Carroll Media Center (CMC) and streamed live online at CMC’s website, www.carrollmediacenter.org starting at 7:00 p.m. on the 16th. It will also premiere on Cable Channel 19 a few days thereafter. Additional airdates will insure the forum replay runs several times before the election and times will be announced at the forum.
